BarrierSystems

Frequent questions

Answers to the questions that come up most often around access management. Every statement refers to the delivered system; what applies to your installation in particular is settled in the project.

Connection and technology

Does the system fit my existing installation?
As a rule, yes. The SmartKit is independent of the manufacturer and connects through digital potential-free inputs and outputs; for selected barrier controllers additionally through Modbus TCP. Existing installations can expressly be retrofitted.
Which barriers can be controlled?
Boom barriers, bollards, gates, doors and turnstiles.
How large is the SmartKit and where is it installed?
13 × 18 × 11 cm, which fits almost any enclosure. It is delivered either in an IP66 box or as a DIN rail component for integration into the barrier control.
How long does installation take?
Installing the SmartKit and configuring the ControlHub take place within a day.
Which means of access are supported?
RFID token, RFID long-range reader, license plate recognition, PIN entry, key switch, GSM phone number, QR code reader, handheld radio transmitter and AI-based vehicle recognition. Further sensors can be connected, and several criteria can be combined.

Operation

Does the installation work without an internet connection?
Yes. The data is held directly on the SmartKit and synchronised continuously when a connection is available. If the connection fails, the installation continues to decide according to the stored rules.
What happens during a malfunction?
The SmartKit detects faults automatically and reports them by itself. Through the ControlHub, manual remote access to the installation is possible during a malfunction.
Can permissions be limited in time?
Yes. Permissions can be granted permanently or temporarily. Time control, groups of installations and zones come in addition.
Is it possible to trace who entered and when?
Yes. Every movement is recorded in the message archive; the evaluation can be exported as CSV or PDF.
Is there an app?
The ControlApp for iOS and Android complements the ControlHub: status in real time, opening and locking, movement history and message archive. Small installations with BaseLink can also be operated through Apple Watch and Apple CarPlay.

Data and connections

Where is the data held?
The ControlHub runs either cloud-based or as an on-premise server directly at the customer site. The city of Basel operates two servers in its own data centre.
Are license plates evaluated outside the installation?
AI-based recognition of license plates and vehicle classes runs self-sufficiently on the SmartKit with the NeuroNetKit extension. In Karlsruhe all collected data is evaluated locally in the installation only and deleted afterwards.
Can it be connected to existing systems?
Yes, through the documented API. The visitor management software VISIT is fully compatible; at Wilo, license plates are transferred from it into access management automatically. ERP solutions can be connected as well.
